the reality of burnout and taking time

WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE

At It's Not Wednesday, we offer online therapy for people experiencing burnout, chronic stress, and emotional exhaustion. Burnout often develops slowly, after long periods of pressure, responsibility, or caring for others. Therapy offers space to pause, understand what has been happening beneath the surface, and begin reconnecting with yourself again

THE REALITY OF BURNOUT

Head in the trees from burnout

Burnout doesn't always look like falling apart. Often, it looks like continuing to show up -getting through your responsibilities, staying reliable, doing what needs to be done, while feeling increasingly disconnected from yourself.

Over time, your energy, patience, and emotional capacity begin to wear down. Things that once felt manageable now don't, and most tasks take more effort than they used to. You might notice less joy in the parts of life that once mattered to you, or a sense that you're moving through your days on autopilot, without the same presence or clarity.

Burnout often builds when you're giving more than you have, for longer than your system can sustain, with too little space for what restores you. Recovery isn't about pushing through or trying harder. It begins with interruption: creating space to step out of the patterns that are depleting you, and reconnecting with what actually supports your energy, your limits, and your sense of self.

How Therapy Can Support Burnout

Burnout isn't just stress. It's often the result of long-standing patterns. Taking on too much responsibility, pushing past your limits, tying your worth to how much you can handle or how well you perform.

We call it ambition.Discipline.Doing the work.

But over time, it can come at the cost of your energy, your clarity, and your connection to yourself.

Therapy offers space to understand what led you here without judgment and to look at the patterns, the pressure, and the expectations you've been carrying, and begin to rebuild in a way that feels steady and sustainable. Moving at a pace that allows for rest and recovery is not falling behind. It's how you begin to come back to yourself.

WHAT WE’LL WORK ON

ACT

MAKING SPACE FOR DIFFICULT EMOTIONS

Burnout can bring frustration, resentment, guilt, or a sense of failure. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) helps you make space for these emotions while reconnecting with the values that matter most to you.

DBT

TOOLS FOR EMOTIONAL OVERWHELM AND STRESS

When the nervous system has been under stress for long periods, emotional regulation becomes more difficult. Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) offers practical, structured skills for:

  • Managing overwhelm when everything feels like too much

  • Creating boundaries around your time, energy, and availability

  • Stabilizing your emotional energy so recovery becomes possible

IFS

UNDERSTANDING THE DIFFERENT PARTS OF YOU

Burnout often involves competing inner pressures - one part of you pushing to keep going, another part completely exhausted. Parts-based therapy helps you understand these internal dynamics with compassion and clarity.

EXISTENTIAL THERAPY

RECONNECTING WITH MEANING AND DIRECTION

Burnout can lead to deeper questions about purpose, identity, and how you want to live. Existential therapy creates space to reflect on these questions and reconnect with what feels meaningful and sustainable moving forward.

A SPACE TO RECOVER

You do not have to keep pushing through burnout alone. Therapy offers space to slow down, reflect, and begin rebuilding a healthier relationship with work, responsibility, and yourself.
